About us

Historical Wardrobe is a veteran-owned business that provides costuming rentals, design, research, and fabrication. Our frequent clients include Historical Filmmakers, Documentaries, Television, and Museum Film projects.

We own an extensive, broad, and ever-growing rental inventory of more than 10,000+ pieces, and are always expanding and exploring new historical periods with authentic textiles and original patterns.

We cover all periods of history with primary emphasis on 1607-1980 -- and our stock includes both military uniforms & civilian clothing.  Our largest collections cover the American Revolutionary War era (1750 - 1800) and the American Civil War era (1850 - 1865)

Costume styles, patterns, and colors are all based on original garments, contemporary artwork, and primary resources.

If we don’t already have it in stock, we continuously fabricate new costumes with perfect authenticity, using our honest experience to provide perfection for the camera while meeting all budgetary needs. We know production— not just facts and fabrics.

We can also provide an experienced and professional Wardrobe Department with Designers, Stylists, Set Costumers, On-Set Dressers, and Stitchers.

Who we are

Wet plate of Kevin and Kathryn by Robert Szabo.

We are Kevin and Kathryn Hershberger, from Richmond, VA, who run Historical Wardrobe together.

Kevin has been a reenactor since 1987 and has been working in historical filmmaking since 1989. He founded Historical Wardrobe in 2008 with a small collection of historically accurate clothing he had made himself, which has grown to over ten thousand pieces today. He is an expert in head-to-toe men’s looks and military uniforms, and has served as a military consultant on several projects. An Emmy-nominated director and producer, he is not only an expert in historical costuming but also understands the nuance of film, television, and theatre.

Kathryn is excited to be back working in historical costuming after a career as a board-certified history teacher. Before education, she worked as a historical interpreter at a 17th-century museum and enjoyed reenacting in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. She is enjoying pulling head-to-toe women’s looks and has a working knowledge of accurate undepinnings for all classes. When she’s not at the office, she also enjoys writing novels, which have a historical influence.
